A double tanker overturned on Highway 38.  The trailer tanker ruptured and all of the contents flowed off the south shoulder of the highway into Cold Creek and toward the Santa Ana river.  An estimated 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel and 2,200 gallons of gasoline were released into the environment.  Together with various agencies, Zelen was instrumental in the cleanup of this site.

The schools bus yard contained a fueling system that leaked gasoline and over the years contaminated the groundwater.

Zelen, through Dominion Inc., was contracted by the Arizona School facility Board to design, build and oversee installation of the remediation (clean up) system for soil and groundwater.

An interesting issue was that the remediation system (a large thermal oxidizing soil vapor extraction system) was to be located in the school’s parking lot not too far from homes and a church.  Although safe the system is noisy.  Zelen helped design a building to house the unit, thereby making it more attractive and minimize audible impacts for the neighborhood and school.  When the clean-up is complete in 1-2 years, the school will use the building for storage.
